Laundry … It may not be on your coveted rental must-have list, but we’d argue that it probably should be.
As you begin your apartment search, keep your dirty laundry in mind. It may not be the most exciting feature to look for, but it is important to consider. Follow these tips to make your best rental decision when it comes to laundry services.
- Do you want the most convenience with a washer and dryer in your apartment? If so, is an apartment-size washer and dryer okay, or do you need full-size appliances?
- If the laundry is on-site, what is the protocol for fairness among tenants? Is it near your apartment or will you have to haul your laundry up and down stairs, like Sheldon and Penny in the “Big Bang Theory?” Is it coin operated or on-your-honor?
- If you found a cheap apartment with an in-unit washer and dryer, ask who is paying for water and electricity when deciding if this apartment really is budget-friendly.
- Make sure the appliances are clean and appear to be in good condition. Ask the landlord about repair history.
- If there is no washer or dryer available, how close is the nearest laundromat? Add in your time and travel when determining this expense. If you can fill multiple washers and dryers at the same time, using a laundromat can be a timesaver. The average cost per laundromat load, to wash and dry, is $3.12.
- Supply your own portable clothes washer at your own risk. The owner or manager of the property must consider the load on the building’s wiring. Or what damage a water leak would do to your apartment and other rentals below you. Your landlord can ask you to remove the portable washer by a certain date. And if you don’t comply, you can be evicted.
Always read and discuss any rental agreement with the landlord before signing on the dotted line. Be sure it clearly states which appliances are supplied and who is responsible for repairs. In most states, landlords have from 14-30 days to arrange for a repair. Report any problem right away to avoid damage that you could be responsible for.
Laundry is enough of a chore as it is, don’t make it harder on yourself than it has to be. Find an apartment that fits your laundry’s lifestyle, and life will be a lot less messy.
